VIENNA – An Austrian Green Party candidate for the European Parliament, Ulrike Lunacek, said it was wrong to ask for a referendum to decide on Turkey’s full membership into the European Union, as the country’s Social Democrat Party has demanded.

“EU membership is a process with certain rules,” Lunacek said. “There should be no barriers if parties satisfy their obligations.” One of the country’s other major political parties, the Austrian People’s Party, has called for Turkey to be accorded a privileged partnership rather than full membership.
