In reference to the turbulence surrounding Treasury Secretary Kemal Unakitan's purported statement last week about opposition CHP leader Deniz Baykal's personal wealth, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has come out with words of support for his embattled cabinet member. "We cannot just throw away our friends," said PM Erdogan, who was attending AKP congresses yesterday in Istanbul.

Unakitan's purported statement about Baykal's wealth was one which he later denied, but which wound up triggering a detail account from Baykal of not only his wealth, but existing money in the CHP coffers. In return, both Unakitan and PM Erdogan himself were accused of being themselves enormously wealthy opposition party members. Rumors that Erdogan would be revealing his personal fortunes to the Turkish public on Tuesday have however been denied by the prime minister himself. Speaking in reference to this, and casting blame on the media for the sensation surrounding the story, Erdogan said yesterday: "Today (yesterday) you will see in all the newspapers 'The Prime Minister will reveal his personal wealth on Tuesday.' But I never said such a thing. Don't use tweezers to take me apart. Now they will just have to wait until Tuesday, and then after Tuesday, they will play with everything I've said for a week.
