The Police Bureau's Department of Public Security has announced that it is instituting an online morgue to help identify unclaimed corpses. According to statistics provided by the Police Bureau, up to 555 corpses found by the police forces over the past 5 years have not been identified. Of these, 97 are female and 458 are male, with 55% of these corpses having been found in Istanbul. 306 bodies of unidentified people have been buried in the Kilyos Cemetary in Istanbul over the past 5 years.

The web site set up by the Department of Public Security provided photographs to assist in identification. Located at www.egm.gov.tr/asayis/kbcara.asp, it contains a warning to people under the age of 18 not to enter. Photographs of the dead are divided according to gender and year found. Police officials are hoping that, despite the fact that many of the people pictured in the photographs may have been buried months, even years ago, they might still have a chance to be identified by friends or relatives visiting the web site.
