Kurbangul Berdimuhammedov, the newly elected President of Turkmenistan, formally began his duties as leader of the country following a swearing-in ceremony yesterday in the Turkmenistan capital Ashkabad.

Votes from the weekend election showed Berdimuhammedov, who some say is the illegitimate son of former Turkmeni leader Turkmenbasi Saparmurat Niyazov, captured 89.23% of the general vote. Taking his vow to lead the country, Berdimuhammedov placed his hand on the Turkmeni Constitution and said he promised to "follow the path of Turkmenbasi."

Present at yesterday's ceremonies, among others, were Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Khazakistan President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Afghani President Hamid Karzai, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili, Ukrainian President Victor Yuschenko, Uzbeki Speaker of the Parliament Halilov Erkin, and Iranian Foreign Minister Monuchehr Mottaki.
