Turkey's new minimum wage comes into affect as of January 1, 2006. The new rates set by the Minimum Wage Fixing Commission have been set as follows, new net minimum wage as 380.46 YTL for workers older than 16 years and 322.43 YTL for workers younger than 16 years old. The new minimum wage comes in with some controversy as a group of protesters demonstrated in the Eyup district of Istanbul on Saturday.

Members of the Association for Fight against Unemployment and Costliness chanted slogans. Association Chairman Gulden Yuva said that the recent increase in the minimum wage was not sufficient.
