The owners and publication directors of 1400 dailies in the world gathered yesterday in Istanbul which had already passed the Eurovision test and got prepared to host the world leaders at the NATO summit this month.The General Committee of the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) and the World Editors Forum convened in Istanbul. At the meeting, P.M. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said; “Our goal is to enlarge the limits of freedom of communication.” He said that the biggest investment was carried out on democracy. Clarifying the reforms made for democracy, Erdogan said that he expected the support of the media on launching Turkey’s accession negotiations with the European Union. Aydin Dogan, the Executive Committee’s Member of WAN said; “Istanbul is the city which a mosque, church and synagogue exist side by side. These three sanctuaries give the message of peace, to the world.”In his statement, famous author Yasar Kemal said; “The media can liberate itself without help and it should be with those, who do not want the cultures and languages be eliminated. The media should not support any specific interest.”
