Sponsored by the Sinop Municipality and the European Cultural Association, the biennial has the theme "the New Order of Things".

Melih Gorgun, curator of the event, said that the biennial enabled residents in the province to take part in the artistic creativity process.

He added that they aimed at establishing a modern art museum in Sinop. Exhibitions and workshops will be held during the biennial. The biennial will end on September 5.

Sinopale bears the name of the goddess Sinope since Sinop, one of the oldest cities on Turkey's Black Sea coast, was named after the goddess. Sinop was a centre of shipbuilding during the Ottoman period. In 1887, the historical dockyards were converted into a prison complex in which many people served their sentences.
