ISTANBUL - Turkish industrialists have criticized the Justice and Development Party, or AKP, government for "leaving industry to the mercy of global developments" at a meeting in Istanbul Wednesday.

Speaking at the assembly meeting for the Istanbul Chamber of Industry, or ISO, chairman Tanıl Küçük said: "We kept expressing the deficiencies in Turkey's industry to the government and the prime minister. The required measures were not taken at the right time. The industry's fate was left to the mercy of global developments. There is also no hope for 2009."

There is no sign of improvement in the economy, Küçük said. "The decline in industrial production seems to have continued and this will result in an employment bottleneck."

Speaking on the government's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund, or IMF, Küçük said an agreement "is the key."

"The negotiations should be finalized as soon as possible," he said.

Some improvements

"The government made some improvements through social security reforms and the employment package at the beginning of last year. But these remain useless while the global financial crisis is shaking the world."

This crisis will eventually end, said Küçük. "The race in competitiveness will continue where it left off. When we survive the crisis, we should join this race," Küçük said.
