VATAN
--ERDOGAN'S TOUGH DECISION
Talks with the International Monetary Fund came to a deadlock about tax administration. The IMF was pushing for a U.S.-style tax administration in Turkey. IMF officials said Turkey could only collect tax using indirect ways. They also said, "You should establish an independent and strong tax administration, just like the American Internal Revenue Service, check all declared income and expenditure of taxpayers and ask them (where they got it)."

IMF officials said they were ready to give a huge loan to Turkey if these conditions were fulfilled. But there is need for political will to take this step, which concerns everyone in Turkey from doctors to lawyers, from businessmen to craftsmen. If Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan says "Yes," everybody will have to account for the money they spent.
