-- ITALIAN MEDAL TO TUSIAD CHAIRPERSON
Arzuhan Dogan Yalcindag, executive chairperson of the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's Association, or TUSIAD, was decorated with the "Order of the Star of Solidarity of Italy" for her contributions to the business perspective in the improvement of Turkish-Italian relations. Italian Ambassador in Ankara Carlo Marsili presented the medal to Yalcindag on behalf of Italian President Giorgio Napoliatano.

-- EUROPEAN PENALTY TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
The European Court of Human Rights ruled in favor of an application on behalf of Nahide Opuz, who was exposed to violence by her ex-husband. Opuz applied to the ECHR claiming "the state failed to protect her". The ECHR ruled that Turkey to pay 36,500 euro in compensation. Halil Opuz, the ex-husband of Nahide Opuz, was ordered to pay 840 TL in compensation for a 2001 stabbing attack against his ex-wife.

Renowned top model Naomi Campbell paid a visit to Emine Erdogan, wife of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, in Ankara and promised her to support projects for the education of girls. Campbell said she wanted to donate income she earned from her fashion campaigning. Campbell described Emine Erdogan as a "very clever and skilful" woman.

World famous model Naomi Campbell met with Emine Erdogan, wife of Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, in Ankara. Campbell, who visited Turkey to attend the Formula-1 and to participate in an assistance campaign, met the first lady. Campbell said that she admired Emine’s efforts for the children of Palestine. "I will collect financial aid and you can use it wherever you want," Campbell told the first lady.

State Minister Cevdet Yilmaz said that they were waiting for some issues including relations with the IMF to become clear in order to announce a medium-term economic program. Yilmaz said those who were preparing the economic program were working on scenarios with or without the IMF.

-- PUTIN RAID ON TELMAN WHO INVESTED IN TURKEY
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin was angered by an investment of Russian citizen of Azerbaijani descent, Telman Ismailov, of $1.4 million in the southern province of Antalya. As Russia struggles with the global financial crisis, the country reacted harshly to such a major investment by Ismailov in Turkey. Putin discussed the "Telman problem" with security executives last week and pushed the button. Anti-smuggling teams raided a market belonging to AST, a company owned by Telman Ismailov, and seized 6,000 containers of goods.

-- THEY WILL TAKE STEPS FOR EDUCATION OF GIRLS
World famous top model Naomi Campbell paid a two-hour visit to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's wife, Emine. Campbell asked the first lady where she could best use income earned from the "Fashion for Assistance" campaign. Emine Erdogan said campaigns could be launched to establish mobile schools to provide education for girls.

The 16th Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival opens on Wednesday with a performance of 'Aida' in the southern province of Antalya. The festival will run to July 3. State Opera and Ballet Director General Rengim Gokmen said the festival was being held at the 2,000-year-old Aspendos Theatre and that they were doing their best to preserve the theatre.

-- EU WAITS FOR REFORM
Turkey did not approve the Additional Protocol of the Customs Union in Parliament and did not open its ports to Greek Cypriot ships. As efforts are underway for taking measures against the initiative the "revision of negotiation," which Turkey may face in the EU summit at the end of 2009, Turkish diplomats say the reforms should continue. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn said they expected Turkey to fulfill obligations of the Additional Protocol and underlined that reforms should continue.

-- AGREEMENT ON NABUCCO PROJECT TO BE SIGNED THIS MONTH
Energy Minister Taner Yildiz attended the International Natural Gas Symposium in Istanbul and informed participants about the Nabucco Project. Yildiz said negotiations were underway for Nabucco, a 3,300-km pipeline project to transport natural gas from mainly Azerbaijan's Shah Denizi fields to European markets. "We will hold one or two meetings on the project. I think that the agreement on the project will be signed this month," Yildiz said.
