French Opposition to Turkey’s EU Membership

Incoming French Foreign Minister Michel Barnier said that “Even though Turkey is making preparations, it is not ready to fulfill the membership conditions of EU.”Speaking at the French Parliament, Barnier said that “We shall oppose Turkey’s membership under the existing circumstances.” The words of Barnier were initially interpreted by Ankara as remarks made for domestic policy concerns. �
