ISTANBUL - Fifteen parked cars were set on fire last night on Çaldıran Street in the Güngören Industrial District on the European side of Istanbul, near Bakırköy. According to information obtained from the police, the fires were the result of arson and the identity or identities of the perpetrators are still unknown. Officials have not made any statement about the possible motive for the act.

The cars were set ablaze with gasoline. The fire department and neighborhood residents quickly got the fire under control, but not before it also damaged other vehicles near the blaze.

The Güngören area is the northern part of the industrial zone that stretches along the E-5 highway. Crime is rampant in the area, which was the site of a terror attack in July 2008.

Police are continuing their investigation into the fires. They have not released a statement indicating whether or not the fires are terror-related.
