Extending a left hand to Greece

ISTANBUL - Two groups gathered in Taksim’s Galatasaray Square on Thursday night to display support for the ongoing protests in Greece.
Members of various leftist parties and groups gathered in Galatasaray around 7 p.m. Protesters met in small groups in front of Galatasaray High School chanting slogans. "We are all Alexis, we are all UÄŸur Kaymaz," was one of the main slogans the group chanted during the protest, referring to 16-year-old Alexandros Grigoropoulos, whose death by police shooting triggered the protests in Greece. Kaymaz was an 11-year-old who was shot to death with his father by police in front of their home in 2005.Â
The group including protesters from the Anti-Capitalist Group, the Democratic Society Party, the Laborer Movement Party, the Socialist Party and anarchists marched to the Greek Consulate on Ä°stiklal Street. Police barricaded the street to keep the mass away from the consulate building, which was dyed red by a group of young people last week in protest. The group chanted slogans against police like "Police show us your identity" and "Police go away, the streets are ours." Later on the group read their press statement.
"We not only share the same geography with the people of Greece, but also share all the conditions that led them to rebel," the statement read, referring to Engin Çeber, who was tortured to death. The group dissolved after reading their press statement. Meanwhile, a smaller group of Global Action Group members gathered in Galatasaray for the same reason.
