Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas said that they demanded a Turkish Cypriot-Greek Cypriot distinction included in the 1960 agreements, to be maintained. He said “No one called that agreement racist at that time. Now we are accused of being so, when we demand a reinforced Turkish-Greek distinction.” Denktas went on to say that a reinforced bi-zonality will benefit both sides and “Bi-zonality must not remain as a word. We want lesser number of Greek Cypriots to come and settle in our region. More importantly, we want the Senate to have 24 Turkish Cypriots and 24 Greek Cypriots. That was the case in the 1960 agreement. “ Denktas also reacted at U.S. Cyprus Coordinator Thomas Weston who said that rejecting the agreement in a referendum will have a dear cost. Denktas said that “The price was paid by both sides. Let him go and see our martyrs’ cemetery!” Meanwhile, both Turkish Cypriot PM Talat and Turkish Foreign Minister Gul who met in Ankara Tuesday, criticized the Greek Cypriot side of slowing down and hindering the negotiating process in Cyprus.
