Leader of the main opposition Republican People's (CHP) Party, Deniz Baykal, has criticized the administration with sharp words for its performance during the process of naming a replacement for outgoing president of the Central Bank, Sureyya Serdengecti. Baykal's criticism came on the heels of yesterday's announcement by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer that Erdem Basci, the focus of recent press controversy, was not in fact on the list of possible replacements for Serdengecti.

"It  is not clear whether we are talking about the Central Bank or a student organization," commented Baykal in reference to the ambiguity in Ankara. "What is going on? The situation with the military General Staff is clear, and now the Central Bank enters the scene. May Allah pity Turkey. A ruling party like the one we have now will harm Turkey in every way.....In every other country in the world, the person who will head up a central bank is clarified well in advance. But here, the President says 'we never received a list of candidates,' and the Prime Minister says 'We'll appoint whomever we want.' Meanwhile, an acting president of the Central Bank is appointed, and right after that, three people resign."
