60’s Turk films to hit Istanbul Modern

ISTANBUL - Istanbul Modern Cinema will present a selection from 60’s black and white Turkish cinema from May 7 to 14.

In collaboration with Mimar Sinan Cinema-TV Center, the program focuses on the social realist films of the era. The stories will take the audience on a nostalgic journey through old times and space, where to witness a proud Istanbul, miserable peasants and to listen to oldie-goodies and find an odd comfort that can be only found in these Turkish films.

The program titled "Good Day, Turkey!" will also welcome directors and actors as guests such as Halit Refiğ, Duygu Sağıroğlu, Selma Güneri, Göksel Arsoy, Ertem Göreç, Nilüfer Aydan.

Among the films to be screened during the week are Yılmaz Güney’s "Umut" (Hope), which is regarded as a turning point in Turkish cinema; Duygu Sağıroğlu’s first film "Bitmeyen Yol" (The Unending Road), which deals with internal emigration; Halit Refiğ’s "Şehirdeki Yabancı" (A Stranger in Town) on employee and employer relations; Bilge Olgaç’s "Linç" (Lynch), which is regarded as the best prison film of Turkish cinema history; "Ertem Göreç’s "Karanlıkta Uyananlar" (Those Awakening in the Dark).

The program will also present some balck and white cult films of Turkish cinema such as Ömer Lütfi Akad’s "Vesikalı Yarim" (My Prostitute Love), Atıf Yılmaz’s "Ah Güzel Istanbul" (Ah, Beautiful Istanbul), and Memduh Ün’s "Kırık Çanaklar" (Broken Dishes).

One-day festival
The fourth edition of the one-day festival is organized in collaboration with the Cinema Writers’ Association and is scheduled for Saturday.

Titled "Media Twisting," the festival will present four different looks and four similar interpretations on media perspective. The program will include Sidney Lumet’s "Dog Day Afternoon," Costa Gavras’ "Mad City," Oliver Stone’s "Natural Born Killers" and "Barry Levinson’s "Wag The Dog." All screenings are free of charge for museum visitors.
