ISTANBUL - The Mediterranean town of Adana will be livened by the annual Golden Boll Film Festival from June 8-13. Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the festival will bring 177 films from all around the world to the silver screen, and 12 Turkish films will compete for the festival's grand prize

The 16th Golden Boll Film Festival will be held June 8 to 13 in the Mediterranean city of Adana. A total of 177 films from Turkish and world cinema will be screened 300 times during the festival.

Organized for the first time in 1969, the festival will celebrate its 40th birthday this year. "Due to the 40th anniversary of the event, which was organized at intervals until 2005 when it became an annual one, the General Directorate of Turkish Post, or PTT, will print a special stamp.

Musician Cahit Berkay will compose a song which will also be published in a 40th-year catalog. The festival will be organized with a budget of nearly $5 million and will enliven the Mediterranean region," said Adana Mayor Aytaç Durak at a press conference held to launch the festival.

Durak said this year’s Golden Boll Lifetime Achievement Awards would be given to director Ömr Lütfi Akad, actress Filiz Akın, actor Yusuf Sezgin and musician Cahit Berkay.

Fevzi Acevit, general manager of Altın Koza A.Ş., the organizer of the festival, said the festival would include two sections, national and international. "Adana will be the center of world cinema once again," he said.

12 films to compete

Audiences will have the opportunity to see short films, feature films and documentaries. Thirty-one feature films that were made in the last year have applied for the National Feature Films Competition, and 12 of them have been selected to compete by the festival board.

Among the films to compete for the award are Erden Kıral’s "Vicdan" (Conscience), Pelin Esmer’s "11’e 10 Kala" (10 to 11), Cemal Şan’s "Dilber’in Sekiz Günü" (Dilber’s Eight Days), Ümit Ünal’s "Gölgesizler" (The Shadowless), Murat Düzgünoğlu’s "Hayatın Tuzu" (The Salt of Life), Orhan Eskiköy and Özgür Doğan’s "İki Dil Bir Bavul" (On The Way To School), Aslı Özge’s "Köprüdekiler" (Men on the Bridge), Atalay Taşdiken’s "Mommo Ğ Kız Kardeşim" (My Sister Mommo), Yeşim Ustaoğlu’s "Pandora’nın Kutusu" (Pandora’s Box) , Tayfun Pirselimoğlu’s "Pus" (Fog), Semih Kaplanoğlu’s "Süt" (Milk) and Mahmut Fazıl Coşkun’s "Uzak İhtimal" (Wrong Rosary).

The jury of the National Feature Films Competition will work under the presidency of world-known film director Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Jury members will include actor Bulut Aras, author and screenplay writer Firuzan, musician Mazlum Çimen, actress Meltem Cumbul, director Özcan Alper, actress Özgü Namal, director of photography Uğur İçbak, and cinema writer and scholar Professor Zeynep Tül Akbal Süalp.

Films are selected for the Golden Boll Film Festival’s National Students’ Films Competition, which is held to encourage young filmmakers to continue their education in communication and fine arts faculties and to award their achievements. The awards will be given in four categories: Best Documentary, Best Animation, Best Experimental and Best Fiction. This year, 134 films from various universities were submitted to the competition, and 34 of them were accepted into the competition by a pre-selection jury.

The jury members of the National Students' Films Competition will be actor Ahmet Kural, director of photography Gökhan Atılmış, director Handan İpekçi, cinema writer Senem Aytaç and editor Ulaş Cihan Şimşek. Another competition will be among the short films produced in Mediterranean countries. Awards will be given in four categories: fiction, documentary, animation and experimental.

A total of 241 films have applied for the competition from Greece, Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Albania, Serbia, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Palestine, Lebanon, Israel and Turkey. Forty-eight of these films have been selected for the competition.

The jury members of the International Mediterranean Countries Short Films Competition are well-known Greek director Andreas Sinanos, Hungarian director Csaba Bollok, Press and Cultural AttachŽ of the Dutch Consulate in Istanbul and member of executive board of the Istanbul International Short Films Festival Danı‘l Coenraad Stork, director Ümit Ünal and festival director from Italy Willian Azzella.

Best Film Award from SIYAD

As part of the National Feature Films Competition, the Cinema Writers Association, or SİYAD, will give its Best Film Award. The film will be chosen by cinema writers, Özgür Şeyben, Uğur Vardan and Yusuf Güven.

As part of the festival, there will be a section titled "Cinema Knows No Bounds." In this section there will be film screenings for people with disabilities.

There will also be a special section for Iranian cinema in this year's festival. It will introduce important works by Iranian new wave filmmakers who have won recognition in international festivals. Screenings of the festival will start June 8 and end June 13 at an award ceremony.
