The Bulgarian coast guard fired on the fishing vessel as it tried to leave the scene. Turkish fisherman, Yalcin Ercan, was shot in the chest and died on his way to a hospital.

Bulgarian military prosecutors said they planned to file lawsuits against both the Turkish fishermen and the Bulgarian border patrol responsible for Ercan’s death. The Turkish-Bulgarian joint border commission will convene on Friday to begin an investigation into the incident.

In a separate incident, a Turkish fishing boat was held off Varna coast on Wednesday charged with violating Bulgarian territorial waters and poaching. Ten Turkish crew members were taken into custody, Bulgarian police said.
