ISTANBUL - Center Mehmet Okur, who plays for the Utah Jazz in the NBA, has been left out of the Turkish national basketball squad announced yesterday.

Okur was omitted from the squad that will play in the European Championship in Poland in September due to injury, but coach Bogdan Tanjevic left the door open for the Jazz star.

"We all know that Mehmet Okur is a special player for Turkish basketball and he has some rights that other players don’t," said Tanjevic. "He had some fitness problems in the last two years, and said that he will not be a part of the squad, but may return if he is 100 percent fit."

Another Turkish player in the NBA, Orlando Magic’s Hidayet "Hedo" Türkoğlu is a part of the Turkish squad.
