GERMANY - A new documentary series about the 600-year history of Turks migrating to Germany and Austria, their expectations and daily realities, was opened at a gala event at the Turkish State Television, or TRT, Tepebaşı Studios on Monday.

Istanbul Mayor Muammer Güler was in attendance for the premier of the documentary series, "Turkish Traces in Germany."

"Fifty years of a 600-year mystery presented in the documentary are very close to us. People went to Germany with great expectations. There are very big differences between the point they have reached today and their expectations," said Güler, adding that Turkish citizens in Germany were still foreigners and faced many difficulties.

Israfil Kuralay, president of Yedirenk Iletisim and producer of the series, said the documentary revealed a long process starting from Vienna and then heading to Germany. Following the speeches, an exhibition showing scenes from the documentary was opened.

The six-part documentary was shot over two months in Austria and Germany with the contribution of many German historians. The documentary was directed by Turgut Söğüt and the music was composed by Gökmen Ürü. The first part of the series will be shown today at 11 p.m. on TRT 1.
