Turkey's President Abdullah Gul will welcome Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Istanbul on Thursday and hold an important meeting with him.

Haberin Devamı

The visit was highly criticized for being hastily planned; but this rashness stems from the growing nuclear crisis between Iran and the United States that is also expected to top the agenda of the meeting.

In other words, in this instance, time is of the essence.

Gul will deliver important messages to Ahmadinejad.

Gul believes that Turkey has gained respect and trust in the eyes of Iran, as well as in the eyes of other countries in the region

PLEASE, MOVE WITH HASTE

It is likely that Gul will mention these main points:

--There are some who take a differing view over the Iranian issue within the United States administration; it is possible to name points of contention.

--Israel places the current U.S. administration under pressure to take a quick decision, since Barack Obama, who is expected to follow more "pigeon" politics regarding the Iranian issue, is seen moving closer to an election win. Israel is in too much of a hurry.

--It is impossible to say if Israel's pressure will amount to anything, which is why we need to assume that time is of the essence. Obviously, diplomacy is the only way to solve the problem and address the important European proposal that stands before us.

--I think you can also agree the proposal, although somewhat complicated, is very fair.

--It would be highly beneficial to respond to this proposal with some haste because those believing that Iran is trying to gain time are strengthening this thesis.

--We will do what we can do; but we also expect you to move with haste. We are not alone in this desire; this is the expectation of the entire world.

EXECUTIVE AND JUDICIARY BODIES SUMMIT FOR EU

Naturally, Iran is not the only issue awaiting Gul.

As far as I have been able to learn, Gul maintains the EU issue at the top of his agenda and works to develop his future programs within this framework.

Gul will pay official visits to three or four European countries before May, and will welcome the presidents of three European countries in Turkey.

He will also attend the Frankfurt Book Fair and meet with Germany’s administration.

During the same term, the heads of state of EU member countries attending the "Water" and "Civilizations" summits are expected to meet Gul's EU lobby.

In addition, Gul also plans schedules focusing on domestic politics related to the EU.

Bringing the heads of all legislative and judiciary bodies together will be the most important of these, as the new legislative period of the Turkish parliamentary begins.

The attendance of Parliament Spokesman Koksal Toptan and Premier Tayyip Erdogan is also expected, while the attendance of Foreign Minister Ali Babacan is certain.

To speak honestly, a president such as Gul should have these issues on his agenda, instead of conducting clumsy late-night clandestine meetings with the prime minister.
