Turk minister says ECOTA to take effect in 2009

ECOTA, Turkey's first preferential trade agreement after Customs Union, that will gradually drop the 80 percent of the products' customs taxes to 15 percent would take effect on January 1 in 2009, Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said on Sunday, Anatolian Agency reported.

"Customs taxes of 80 percent of the products will be dropped to 15 percent gradually by ECOTA (Economic Cooperation Organization Trade Agreement). The first tranche reductions will be minimum 10 percent for nearly 500 products in the beginning of 2009," Tuzmen quoted as saying by Anatolian Agency.

 

Tuzmen also said that ECOTA, signed between Turkey, Afghanistan, Iran, Pakistan and Tajikistan was the first preferential trade agreement which Turkey signed on regional base after Customs Union.

The Customs Union Agreement between Turkey and the European Union came into effect on December in 1995. According to agreement, goods can travel between the two entities without any customs restrictions except essential economic areas such as agriculture. Â
