ISTANBUL - Solarkent, a housing complex that uses solar energy to produce electricity, opened Tuesday with the participation of Energy Minister Taner Yıldız and Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş.

Speaking at the ceremony, Topbaş said climate change is forcing cities to become more aware of renewable energy. "Istanbul needs more environmentally friendly housing complexes due to its unbalanced immigration problem," he said.

Noting that the government is trying to economize from natural resources such as water and natural gas, he said, "We have produced energy from methane gas and with will use it to supply energy to 120,000 houses. We also created incentives for people to use rain water for watering, and we even plan to create energy from the currents of the Bosphorus."

"Solarkent sets an example for both private and public sectors," Yıldız said.
