"Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty is of great importance. Its borders were recognized by the United Nations," Gul said.

"We attribute great importance to stability and peace in the Caucasus since these are essential for the economic cooperation in the region. Turkey has always advocated that problems should be resolved through dialogue. After escalation of tension in the region, I held talks with both President Saakashvili and President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia," he also said.

The recent developments in Caucasus had potentially existed in the region for a long time adding that he expressed his concerns about the problems to Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili during his last two meetings with him, Gul added.

Gul also assessed his first year in the office after his election as the president, and said the critics for him should not be prejudiced.

Gul was criticized for the selection of the university rectors as he was said to prefer the pro-ruling Justice and Development Party rectors even they were not at the first place at the list, which was formed after the election held at their own university.

He said the current promotion of university rectors by president was not a right procedure and a new procedure was needed for promotion and assignation of them.

"I wish for a new system for this and desire the president not to intervene in this process. I would like to call both government and the parliament about this issue."
