The candidate list, determined by Turkey's higher education board for 23 newly established universities, consisted of names that could again lead to fierce debates in the country, as arguments over the Turkish president's latest rector appointments continue.

The Higher Education Board (YOK) submitted Wednesday the short-list of three candidates to Turkish President Abdullah Gul for final selection.

Thirty-six of the 69 candidates vying for the role of rector at the 23 newly established universities signed a statement which demanded the lifting the headscarf ban in universities.

Gul last week appointed new rectors to 21 universities around the country, vetoing the university chiefs who opposed lifting the headscarf ban in universities, although some of them won the voting among academic staff.

His move sparked fierce reactions from academics, with 36 of them, including deans, resigning from three universities.
