"Now that Turkey is passing through such a climate, it is everyone's responsibility to lead our country forward to emerge from this as strong as possible. All segments and institutions of society have their respective duties," Gul told at a press conference.

He added that he has already been holding several meeting with parties to reduce the tension in Turkey

"Turkey's national and strategic targets should never be overshadowed. I held many meetings regarding the issue earlier. I offered the necessary advice and will continue to do so, I will continue my efforts," he added.

The detainment of more than 20 people, including two former commanders, under the latest wave of the Ergenekon operation further heightened tension in Turkey. Under the Ergenekon operation, an illegal organization is claimed to be plotting a series of events to provoke the armed forces to overthrow the government.

Turkey's opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli extended on Thursday his support to former army chief Gen. Hilmi Ozkok's suggestion that "a formal actor should step in," saying under the circumstances the initial responsibility should belong to Gul.
