A high-level Turkish official rejected on Friday the alleged gradual coup plan, which was published in some media organs that known to be close to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The official told Hurriyet daily that security forces had not informed of such coup plans.

"We do not even allow officers working on this operation to go home. I assume certain individuals sit and write these assumptions themselves. Tuncay Ozkan (a nationalist journalist) will organize a meeting on July 6, maybe someone is fabricating something surrounding this," he added.

Some newspapers claimed on Thursday documents seized during the Ergenekon operation indicate that the organization planned to trigger a coup to unseat the Turkish government. The report was published in newspapers, which are owned by pro-AKP groups, and then picked by some foreign news agencies.

The reports claimed the documents detailed a four-point plan, including assassinations of prominent individuals, launching illegal protests across 40 provinces on July 7, sparking clashes with security forces, and promoting the country’s worsening economic conditions.

Observers warn about disinformation efforts on such complicated matters. The details of the Ergenekon organization are yet to be revealed as the indictment on the case has just been completed after 13 months.Â

The Ergenekon operation, which started on June 2007, geared up after the filing of the closure case against the AKP. The detainment of anti-AKP politicians, journalists and intellectuals without any legal charges raised eyebrows in Turkey, as many questioned whether the operation is being used to suppress opponents of the government.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had claimed that the closure case was a response to the government's determination in the Ergenekon operation, while opposition parties and many in Turkey think otherwise.
