The meeting came as Kivrikoglu's name was being circulated in the allegations made by Tuncay Guney, a key witness in the country's controversial Ergenekon operation.

Guney, whose reliability has been questioned by experts and psychiatrists who say he might be suffering from a mental illness, said top army officials, the core administrative body of the so-called Ergenekon gang, have been holding "clandestine meetings" to plan a coup.

Retired generals, including Kivrikoglu, have admitted that such meetings were held to discuss recent developments in the country, as well as globally, but that assessments made during these meetings were presented to the prime ministers in a report.
