ISTANBUL - The latest mobile satellite navigation technology has been brought to Istanbul by "CepTrafik+," a project that enables people to find the fastest and least congested routes through the city via their mobile phones.

The joint project devised by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Microsoft, Intelligent Transport Services and Turkey’s leading mobile company, Turkcell, aims to make life easier for those trying to get from A to B in what is one of the busiest and most congested cities in Europe.

"Mobile phones are no longer just devices used to contact people, they are computers that can make aspects of everyday life easier, the Istanbul metropolitan municipality spokesmen, Muzaffer Hacımustafaoğlu, said at a press conference in municipality headquarters Monday.

CepTrafik+ is a satellite navigation system that operates on Windows mobile technology phones and other computer mobiles on the Turkcell network. Ceptrafik+ is an advanced version of CepTrafik, which was a basic navigation system launched in Istanbul in January this year. Following its success with 400,000 users in Istanbul, Ceptraffic+ has been launched with even more features that provide swifter transportation across the city.

CepTrafik+ has four key functions. The first is a street map that gives directions using the shortest and least congested routes. The second is a camera device that establishes aerial views of traffic using 300 cameras located around the city. The third is a journey planner that automatically sends updates to the phone as routes become less congested to ensure the swiftest possible journey. The final function is called "swift glance," which gives a view of traffic in the set destination.

Turkcell’s assistant general manager, Ekrem Yener, said the service would be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The service will be free for the first year and people can apply by writing "trafik" and sending it to 1530. After the first year, there will be a fixed charge of YTL 5 per month. The Ceptrafik+ project hopes to attract up to 1 million users this year, Yener said.
