GAZİANTEP - A historic mansion from the Ottoman Empire era in Gaziantep has been restored and jas re-opened as a boutique hotel.

Abdülkadir Demir, general secretary of the Special Provincial Administration of Gaziantep, said while they were going through the assets of the administration during a restructure, they discovered a historic mansion in the district of Eyüpoğlu was among them.

Demir said the mansion had been used as a lodging for the Provincial Directorate for National Education, but as it was on the list of cultural heritage and natural assets they started work on other possible uses for the estate.

"The restoration project was undertaken through voluntary work by architect Zeynep Dinler. We sent the mansion project to the Adana Cultural and Natural Conservation Board. After examination, the project was approved and restoration began,” he said.

Demir said their aim for the mansion was for it to become an asset for tourism and they were happy to have achieved that. Demir also said an investor had rented the mansion for five years for YTL 2,750 per month. Accommodation is one of the biggest problems in Diyarbakır, said Demir, and added, “The quality of accommodation should be raised. Therefore, we hope to turn many historical buildings into boutique hotels.”

Demir said the mansion had nine suites with private bathrooms and a large courtyard that could be used for various activities. "The mansion is a special tourism asset in Diyarbakır and we are lucky to have restored it in such a short period of time.” The mansion was donated to the Special Provincial
Administration by the Göğüş family of Gaziantep. Although the mansion does not have a recorded history, Demir said information on the age of the building had been revealed through features in the ceiling decorations. All of the rooms are decorated with overlays, Demir said.

The mansion consists of two separate buildings. The main building has six rooms. On the lower floor there is a stable and storage room. The other building holds four rooms, including two main rooms, Demir said, and added, “One of the main rooms has a large alcove. Usually, the houses of Antep had one room alcoves, but this one has two room alcoves... People living in the neighborhood know the mansion is a historic Antep house."
