Erdogan in Madrid: Turkey can show world that alliances between civilizations possible

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke at the opening of the Alliance Between Civilizations forum yesterday in the Spanish capital Madrid, noting that Turkey was in itself "an answer to the clashes in the world between civilizations."
Erdogan's comments did place some focus on Ankara's ongoing quest for full EU membership, with the Prime Minister asserting at one point that "A Turkish EU membership would show the entire world that alliances between civilizations are possible." The Alliance Between Civilizations project is being co-headed by Erdogan and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero. The forum is Madrid is being attended by United Nations General Secretary Ban-ki Moon, as well as many other notable international figures.
