A group of professors and scientists from some of the most prestigious universities in Europe have come together to write a shared declaration protesting French President Nicholas Sarkozy's stance against Turkish entrance into the EU. The declaration, published on an internet site called "Open Democracy," underlines that President Sarkozy has used "illegitimate" and "unfounded" allegations against Turkey in trying to prevent it from entering the EU.

The declaration also reclals the 1999 vote at an EU summit in which all members countries at that point voted to allow Turkey to begin its quest for membership. The declaration also notes that Turkish membership in the EU as such would support a more pluralistic union, and erase the existing image that the EU is a "Christian club."
