Nurettin Demirtas was elected general leader of the largely Kurdish-backed Turkish political party, the Democratic Society Party (DTP) yesterday in Diyarbakir. After his election by 234 at the DTP's 2nd Congress, Demirtas commented on the party's future, as well as the horizon for Kurdish citizens of Turkey, noting "Even the example of what's happening in Bulgaria could open paths towards solutions for us.

There, by giving the ethnically Turkish citizens their rights, problems were solved within the framework of a peaceful and democratic constitution."

Yesterday's DTP Congress was held in Diyarbakir's Ankara Buyukhanli Hotel. Demirtas has spent 10 years of his life thus far in prison on charges of being a PKK member. During his remarks at the opening of the congress, Demirtas said:

"We see the Turkish Parliament as the place for solutions. But the fact is, we face an incredible amount of lack of acceptance and lynch-style politics. There is an attempt to eliminate the Kurds. Before time runs out, we need to put together a democratic roof under which we can stand. We saw a lack of this on July 22 (general elections)."
