Though main opposition CHP Party MPs protested Gul's election by not attending parliamentary sessions in which the new president was elected and congratulated, it is anticipated that CHP members will be on hand for Gul's address to the TBMM, and for the official opening of the new legislative year. Whether or not top commander of the Turkish armed forces, General Yasar Buyukanit, will attend is not yet known.

This evening in Ankara, the newly elected Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Koksal Toptan, is hosting a reception in honor of the new parliamentary legislative year. For the first time in five years, invitations were also sent out to members' spouses. Both President Gul and General Yasar Buyukanit are expected to attend the reception hosted by Toptan.
