The match between the Turkish and Greek national football teams on Saturday night ended up a 4-1 victory for Turkey. The Greek team, who held the most recent European championship, had expected to beat their neighbors in the match two nights ago in Athens.

Instead, with Greek fans growing increasingly restless and angry as the Turkish goals began to add up, first Tuncay, then Gokhan, then Tumer, and finally Gokdeniz from the Turkish team kicked in goals to tie up a game that stunned the audience and made headlines through the European media. Some of the headlines from major European newspaper following Saturday night's match were as follows:

La Gazzetta dello Sport (Italy): A Turkish storm destroys Greece

Tuttosport (Italy): Turkey belittles and rips apart Greece in front of stands

ARD Television (Germany): Turkey drills four goals into Greek wall, passes through

Aftenpost (Norway): Turks will play stongly in Norway

Verdens Gang (Norway): The Turks show their muscles and take their place in the leader's throne

As for the Greek media's treatment of the match, little sympathy was shown for the performance of the national team against Turkey. Television announcers characterized the match as "A dark night for our national team," and "The Waterloo of the European championships." Newspaper headlines the next day greeted readers with headlines such as "They humiliated us, and they deserved to," "National disgrace," and "The Turkish team destroys us in our home. A tragedy." By the end of Saturday night's match, Greek fans were so angry and distraught over the performance of their national team against Turkey that the football field in Athens became the target for hundreds and hundreds of flying objects aimed at the players in protest, from plastic bottles to cola cans and flag poles.
