EU countries see new bid to save Turkeys 8 shelved accession talks topics

EU countries in support of Turkey's EU membership bid have started a movement for the immediate re-opening of the eight accession talks topics shelved following Ankara's initial refusal to budge on opening up either air or sea ports to Southern Cypriot trade. The move comes following Ankara's latest signalling that it will in fact be willing to open at least one large port to Southern Cypriot trade.

The EU Commission has said it is working closely with current EU president Finland on this subject.

The Southern Cypriot authority has, in turn, reacted negatively to this latest attempt by the EU to save Turkey's membership bid. This "window formula," as the attempt is being called, is reportedly receiving strong support from England, Spain, Sweden, and Italy. Countries signalling their displeasure with this initiative are, in addition to Southern Cyprus, Greece, France, and Ireland.
