"I was very pleased about Turkey's strength and ability to deal with the economic fluctuation the country suffered in May this year," Scowcroft said during a visit to Turkey. He said that conviction about Turkey's economic potential is increasing in the U.S. and other countries. As part of his visit to Turkey with the ATC, Scowcroft dined with members of the Turkish-American Business Council, a part of the Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK).

Scowcroft said that Turkey and the U.S. share similar goals and that the ATC had participated in productive meetings on his visits to Turkey. Scowcroft also pledged American support for Turkey's bid to join the European Union. "I would like to congratulate you all on your achievements with regards to the European Union." He went on to say that no other potential member of the group faced so many difficulties during the accession process. He complimented Turkey for its positive outlook despite these difficulties, which he said showed Turks' determination and strength.
