To mark the one year anniversary of the start of talks between Turkey and the EU, the Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association (TUSIAD) are sponsoring a "European-Turkey Week" which began yesterday in the Belgian capital Brussels. Speaking in Brussels at a press conference before the start of the first symposium yesterday, TUSIAD President Omer Sabanci promised "It will not be Turks in Europe, but Europeans in Turkey who are looking for work."

Speaking about what he called Turkey's economic strength, its fast growth, and the level of its import-export numbers, Sabanci said "Turkey will be medicine for an EU which is growing older." Sabanci also noted that the EU was the prime partner for Turkey, and went on "In the last four years, our economy has grown at an average of 7.6%. European technology firms are settling in Turkey.

Turkey's young and dynamic population will be a locomotive for Europe. We are a part of Europe. Turkey has the potential to create work for Europeans. We will not come to Europe to find work. To the contrary, European will come to us to find work.....We want to be a part of a Europe which has gotten over its own domestic arguments, and has gained competitive strength. And I believe that sooner or later, it will. The EU will reach the place it deserves in the world. And Turkey will play a great role in the achievement of that goal."
