Istanbul has chosen her ferry

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s campaign, ‘Istanbul, Choose your Ferry’, aiming to allow Istanbullites to have a say in the model of ferry in which to travel has now come to an end with the counting of the votes completed. The results will be revealed on Tuesday, 27 June at the Port of Ortaköy, by the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Mr. Kadir Topbaş. Istanbul Sea Busses (IDO) had selected 8 models for ferries to be used for public transportation, and had asked Istanbullites to vote for their favourite.

Istanbullites were able to vote via the internet, and at Ballot boxes set up at underground stations, IDO ports and even in supermarkets throughout Istanbul for a duration of two months starting 24 April 2006. The most popular boat was the one most similar to the traditional ferry in use today, model number 4, with 33 per cent of the votes. 20 new ferries will be made in groups of five, of which the first group is expected to be in circulation as of mid-2007.
