The first Turkish mountain climbing team to attempt to scale Mt. Everest is setting out on their quest this week, with financial backing from the Petrol Ofisi company. The 11 person team, composed of men and women, will spend between March 27 and June 10 trying to reach the top of Everest.

On reaching the top, they plan to plant the Turkish flag, as well as the Petrol Ofisi flag. Speaking for the team, Serhan Pocan noted that, even before climbing Mt. Everest, the team had already succeeded in many ways: "The decision by a Turkish team to climb the highest mountain in the world is already a success. For at least one woman on our team to climb above 8,850 meters, in fact for every step we take beyond 8,035 meters, we bring success for our Turkey."
