Borrel: The EU has no magic wand

"Don't expect a magical solution from us [the EU], " said President of the European Parliament Joseph Borrel as he left Cyprus on Monday, sending a clear message that a solution to the Cyprus issue was a matter for the Cypriots to solve themselves. "The EU has no magic wand to pull a white rabbit from a hat," continued Borrel surprising the EU member state of Greek Cyprus. The Greeks had tried to block Turkey's accession talks last week, however, failed when the UK and US stepped in at the last minute forcing them to back down.

The EU have made it very clear that any solution on Cyprus should be negotiated under UN supervision. The Greek Cypriots rejected the Annan plan, part of a UN initiative to reunite the island, which then put a hold on all international efforts.
