The bags, designed by leading Turkish fashion designer Bahar Korçan, are made of 100 percent raw cotton and were produced using an environmentally friendly process. The bags were doled out on Valentine’s Day at the Ankamall in Ankara and are now available on sale in shops and supermarkets in malls across the country.
Designer Bahar Korçan said plastic bags only cause unnecessary garbage and pollution. He said their production causes a lot of damage to the environment by heavily polluting rivers, lakes and water supplies. The production process is also more expensive because of the material and the larger quantity needed. Korçan said although it will take time for fabric bags to become widespread, even a small number of people switching to fabric will make a difference to the environment.
