Belgian tourists prefer Turkey says Tour Operators Union

The number of Belgian people booking for hotels in Turkey for this summer has increased by 10 percent when compared with the previous year, putting Turkey to the first place among preferred destinations of Belgian tourists, Belgian Tour Operators Union said on Thursday.

The Union stated that Turkey ''dethroned Spain'' for the first time.

According to the Union, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt are the other countries preferred by the Belgians for vacation.

Belgian tourists who choose Turkey, mainly prefer (southern city of) Antalya, (Aegean town of) Bodrum and (Aegean city of) Izmir.   Â

The number of Belgian tourists visiting Turkey was 150,000 in 1999, while this number increased by 72 percent and rose to 257,000 in 2000.

310,000 Belgians visited Turkey in 2001, while the number of Belgian tourists spending their vacation in Turkey was 314,000 in 2002. This number exceeded 400,000 in 2003 and 2004, and is expected to rise to 500,000 in 2005.
