Spokesperson for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Namik Tan, has characterized the caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed which were published in other European countries following their initial printing in a Danish newspaper as "unfortunate." Said Tan, "We expect, during this period when the importance of cross-cultural dialogue has become so important, people coming from different religions, languages and cultures to show a more cooperative and understanding approach."
Responding to reporters' questions about the Danish incident and the renewed controversy following support for the Danish press in other European press, Tan unscored the responsibility of the press in these matters, noting that provokation was not the appropriate approach.
