Round one over, CHP goes to court

Abdullah Gül of the Justice and Development Party failed to win the presidency during the first round of balloting on Friday, receiving 357 of 361 votes cast, but less than the 367 votes – or two-thirds of the 550-seat parliament - needed to win.

The first round ended with the CHP protesting the election in Constitutional Court on grounds that since less than 367 legislators were present, the election was invalid.

Head of Parliament, Bülent Arınç, recorded the absence of seven CHP (Republican People’s Party) members who had walked out of the session.
