Republican rally in Istanbul

High turnout in Tandoğan, Ankara on 14th April has lead pro-secularists to organise a similar demonstration set to kick off in Istanbul's Çağlayan district at 1:00pm today.

The protest is to be lead by non-government organisations who deal with women's issues and are concerned that the ruling Justice and Development Party wants to impose Islamic law in Turkey.Â
Türkan Saylan, rally organiser and president of the Association in Support of Contemporary Living, said, "The point is to protect Turkey, the Republic and secular order….It is important to show our unity and strength to friend and foe. We cannot possibly accept Sharia rule, and cannot make any concessions with regards our secular order."
