ANTALYA-A survey of 289 11th-grade students in the Mediterranean province of Antalya showed rapper 50 Cent was more familiar to the teenagers than former President Ahmet Kenan Evren who led the 1980 coup in Turkey.

The study conducted for the Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey, or TÜBİTAK, showed photos of various people to 11th grade students at four high schools in Antalya and asked them if they could identify the person. Teachers Kürşat Sert, Meysa Baykal and Seda Ünal conducted the study.

The report’s conclusion said the study, which aimed to investigate how globalization influenced one’s knowledge of his or her environment, was conducted in a scientific manner but those who prepared it were not really prepared for the results.

When shown a photo of former Chief of General Staff and seventh President of Turkey Kenan Evren, who led the 1980 coup, 69 percent of the boys and 88 percent of girls said they did not know him.

Students were also shown the photos of the last Ottoman Sultan Vahidettin, Enver Paşa who dominated the last decade of the empire, Ernesto Che Guevara and Karl Marx. The most known among the photos was the Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara.
