US President George Bush, in a speech he has given every year on April 24th, significantly did not use the word "genocide" in reference to the events of 1915. In his broadcast from the White House, Bush said yesterday, "On this Armenian memory day, we recall the 1.5 million Armenians who were, in the last days of the Ottoman Empire, forced into exile and killed in great numbers." Bush then went on to say that he and other Americans wanted to express support for Armenians all over the world. Turkish-Armenian commissionIn his talk, Bush also mentioned Turkey's relation to Armenia, saying "We are looking towards a future of freedom, peace and prosperity in Armenia and Turkey, and we are hoping that Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's efforts to form a joint commission looking into this period in history will help on this front." Saying that millions of Americans carry Armenian names, and that with their beliefs, traditions, and patriotism, they enrich daily life in the US, President Bush conveyed wishes for all the best to the Armenian world-wide community. Despite all this, not once did Bush use the word "genocide." Â
