"Former U.S. Ambassador to Ankara, Mark Parris is giving away the U.S.-perspective cues as to how will the Turco-U.S. affairs will be shaped after the Iraq War. In this story printed by Sabah daily on Sunday and which is very important in my view, Ambassador Parris was quoted as saying about the tension that occurred after the Turkish Parliament turned down the second Permit that: This was to happen in any case. Balances have changed in the region.

Haberin Devamı

"Retired Ambassador Parris who served  in Turkey between 1997 and 2000, said in a recent evaluation note that new dynamics have to be developed for the continuation of the relations between Turkey and U.S. According to Parris, the framework of the relations were to be altered even if the developments disappointing U.S. would not have been experienced. Parris said that the Incirlik base in Turkey would not be as important as it used to be for U.S. as a result of changes in the region...He said that a year ago U.S. regarded Turkey as her most reliable ally besides Britain. But the situation was different now. But Powell's visit was important to show that our relations were still important,,,, Parris also welcomed Foreign Minister Gul's statement that Turkey was part of the coalition.

"After reading this very important story, one can not keep himself from asking:
1- Was Turkey aware of this change taking place in years?
2- Since Turkey changed her policy of being the strategic partner of U.S. since 1950, on which she based her economic existence, strategic definition and her own importance; what will the new foreign policy of our country be?
3- On which decision of Parliament or Government, does the statement of Gul about "Coalition partnership" is based? Why is Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc opposing it?
4- When the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has  clearly no strategic importance left in the new international order and when the Rauf Denktas policies have totally collapsed, and when Denktas was in a way, declared persona-non-grata by UN, what is the Cyprus policy of the Turkish Republic?

"In sum: In Turkey's foreign policy: Are we on board a creature and headed to a Catastrophe?"
