A flight which could have turned disastrous for a Turkish Onur Air jet that took off from Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport on December 31 has been revealed in photographs taken by a German photographer on vacation at the time in Istanbul.

The airplane took off for Izmir from Istanbul shortly after noon, returning 12 minutes later to the airport when pilots discovered a sharp drop in cabin pressure due to the fact that the cargo door on the airplane, an MD88, has opened.
The photographs taken by the German photographer show clearly the open door of the cargo compartment; two pieces of luggage fell out of the plane, one into the Marmara Sea, the other onto the runway as the airplane landed. Experts noted that had the plane reached a height more than the 2,000 meters it had, the repurcussions could have been much more serious. In 1974, a Turkish Airplanes flight leaving Paris for London exploded in air due to opened cargo door, leading to the deaths of all 346 passengers.
